['helmən], Lillian, amerikanische Schriftstellerin, * New Orleans (Louisiana) 20. 6. 1906, ✝ auf der Insel Martha's Vineyard (Massachusetts) 30. 6. 1984. Ihre erfolgreichen Dramen greifen oft kontroverse Fragen auf und nehmen kritisch zu sozialen Problemen Stellung. Ihr erstes Stück, »The children's hour« (1934), behandelt das Thema der lesbischen Beziehung. Gegen den Faschismus gerichtet waren »Watch on the Rhine« (1941) und »The searching wind« (1944). Hellman schrieb auch Filmskripte für Hollywood, erhielt dort jedoch nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wegen ihrer politischen Haltung Berufsverbot. Darüber und über ihr Leben mit D. Hammett berichtet ihr autobiographisches Werk »Scoundrel time« (1976; deutsch »Die Zeit der Schurken«).
